The Evolution of Saffron & Mishri

Saffron & Mishri is more than just a name; it’s a celebration of the rich, vibrant heritage of Indian sweets, combined with a vision to bring that tradition into the modern world. Inspired by two of the most cherished ingredients in Indian mithai, saffron and mishri, the brand was born out of a deep appreciation for India’s culinary legacy, along with a desire to create something that speaks to both luxury and authenticity.

The name Saffron was chosen for its rich golden hue, its luxurious essence, and its longstanding association with festivity and opulence. On the other hand, Mishri, or crystallized sugar, represents the heart & soul of Indian sweets.

Together, Saffron & Mishri beautifully balances luxury and nostalgia; it’s a journey where tradition meets innovation, where sweetness and luxury are experienced in every moment, and where the essence of India’s finest mithai lives on.

WHAT WE BELIEVE IN

Every culture is remembered by the food it celebrates.

In India, those celebrations have always been marked by mithai. It is more than a sweet. It is a symbol of joy, gratitude, generosity and togetherness, carrying memories from one generation to the next.

We believe Indian mithai does not need reinvention to stay relevant. It deserves reverence. The finest traditions are not preserved by leaving them untouched. They are preserved by continually elevating the way they are experienced.

That is why we obsess over every detail, from the ingredients we source and the recipes we honour, to the craftsmanship we practise, the hospitality we extend and the moments we create.

Because true luxury is not about extravagance. It is about making people feel something. It is about turning the familiar into the unforgettable.

At Saffron & Mishri, we are not simply crafting sweets. We are creating memories, celebrating India's culinary heritage, and helping people rediscover the extraordinary within what they already love.

OUR STORY

Familiar Roots, Fearless Flavours

Every culture is remembered by the food it celebrates. In India, those memories are almost always sweet.

For centuries, mithai has marked our happiest moments. The box carried into a new home. The sweet shared after a long-awaited success. The taste that instantly transports you back to childhood. It has never been just a confection. It is emotion, generosity and celebration, passed from one generation to the next. Yet somewhere along the way, while the world's great cuisines came to be celebrated with artistry and aspiration, Indian mithai began to be seen as familiar rather than extraordinary.

For Gunjan Shrivastava, founder of Saffron & Mishri, this became a deeply personal conviction. Not to reinvent Indian sweets, but to give them the place they have always deserved.

What began as a search for authenticity became a journey across forgotten recipes, exceptional ingredients and timeless techniques preserved by master halwais. Along the way, she discovered that the future of Indian mithai was not about changing what people loved. It was about helping them experience it with renewed admiration.

That belief became Saffron & Mishri. A luxury mithai house built on extraordinary craftsmanship, thoughtful creativity and heartfelt hospitality. A place where every detail, from the recipe to the packaging, from the first bite to the final memory, is designed to turn something familiar into something unforgettable. Because the greatest discoveries are rarely the newest things. They are familiar things, experienced in a way that makes us fall in love with them all over again.

Our purpose is simple: to elevate Indian sweets to their rightful place among the world's finest culinary experiences.

OUR FOUNDER
Gunjan Shrivastava

Saffron & Mishri began with a question its founder couldn't stop asking: why had mithai, the sweet at the heart of every Indian celebration, been left behind?

Gunjan Shrivastava grew up in Allahabad, surrounded by the ritual of mithai, the boxes exchanged, the sweets pressed into your hand at every festival and milestone. But over the years she watched people drift away from it. Not because they had stopped loving it, but because they had stopped trusting it. Somewhere along the way, authenticity, hygiene and honest sourcing had quietly gone missing from the industry.

So she set out to bring the real thing back.

Gunjan is not a conventional sweet-maker. She holds a Ph.D. in Visual Arts and a Diploma in Textile Design, and she approaches mithai the way an artist approaches a canvas, with an eye for detail, a respect for craft, and a belief that a sweet can be as beautiful as it is delicious. That sensibility runs through everything, from the Banarasi-textile motifs on our boxes to the way each mithai is finished by hand.

To build Saffron & Mishri, she travelled across India, region by region, tracing authentic recipes to their roots and learning the techniques that make each one what it is. The result is a range that honours tradition and isn't afraid to reinvent it. Classic mithai made properly, and fusion mithai that carries a familiar Indian sweet somewhere it has never been.

Her hope is simple. That a single bite can carry you back, to a memory, a celebration, a version of home, and remind you of the traditions you have always been part of.
